An Investigation of Vocabulary Development and Lexical Chunk Use in Untimed English Writing by Chinese English Majors

摘要 本研究基于WECCL10语料库的124篇同一主题作文,探讨分析学习者产出性词汇的丰富性发展和词块运用能力差异。研究主要从词频分布、词汇多样性、词汇密度、句内词数、平均词长等方面考察词汇发展,提取并分析3-5词词块运用能力。研究发现,在词汇丰富性发展方面,四个年级的学生均出现过度使用高频词的现象,词汇多样性、句内词数和平均词长都呈非线性发展模式,只有词汇密度呈线性增长。词块运用能力方面,随着年级的增长,词块结构趋于完整,语义更加明确。 The present study investigates English majors’ richness development of productive knowledge and differences in lexical chunks application ability based on WECCL 10 corpus. Vocabulary development is mainly studied in terms of vocabulary profile, lexical variation, lexical density, number of words in a sentence and mean word length, and the application ability is explored by extracting and analyzing 3-5 lexical chunks. The study indicates that, the high-frequency words are commonly overused; lexical variation, number of words in a sentence and mean word length reflect nonlinear growth model, whereas lexical density in linear growth model. In the aspect of lexical chunks, the chunks are more complete and meaningful with the grade growth.
