Within the contexts of British colonial politics and social culture during two world wars, Lawrence Durrell's autobiographical novel Pied Piper of Lovers reveals economic, racial and cultural factors that hinder the homecoming of the children of Empire. Different from the narrative perspective of the colonized "other" who launches ethical criticisms on colonial politics, Durrell carries out his political ethical criticism on imperial discourse of glory from the perspective of Walsh Clifton, one of the descendants of low ranking empire builders, who suffers from British "home" complex and cultural anxiety.
