Sculpture Fabrication——Interview with Richard Deacon

理查德·迪肯1949年出生于英国威尔士,是当今英国乃至世界著名的雕塑家之一,也是20世纪八十年代公认的受安东尼·卡洛影响的"New Generation(新世代)"的代表人物之一。他的抽象雕塑作品风格多样,材料与造型语言丰富,均体现了他对制造的热忱以及对材料与形式互动的追求。他通过造型与尺度等因素建立起作品与观赏者之间的联系,使作品被感知,令观赏者心动。同时他涉猎绘画、陶艺等多种艺术门类,并将其与雕塑创作相互作用,从而激发出多维的艺术思考。受隋建国先生的引荐和邀请,理查德·迪肯从上世纪九十年代起多次来到中国,并有两件大型公共艺术作品立于北京。本次他在北京公社画廊举办《理查德·迪肯:新雕塑》个人雕塑展,并于中央美术学院举办主题讲座"每当我想谈论未来,思路却总被带回过去"。展览期间,理查德·迪肯于北京公社接受《雕塑》杂志社的专访,以下是本次采访的内容。

Richard Deacon is one of the most honored British sculptor in the world, and representative of the ＂New Generation＂ influenced by Anthony Caro in the 1980s. In his practice, he plays with a large span of materials and languages, and produces a large amount of abstract sculptures in enriched styles as a result, which reveals his passion toward fabrication and pursuit to the interrelationship between materials and forms. Invited by Mr. Jianguo Sui, Richard Deacon is holding his first solo art show here in Beiiing, named ＂Richard Deacon： New Sculptures＂ , showing his new series of ＂New Alphabet＂ and ＂Custom＂ . The ＂Sculpture＂ Magazine had the opportunity to interview him on March 18, 2018 at the Beiiing Commune Gallery. During the talk, Richard Deacon described his understanding to the word ＂fabricate＂- playing with materials to do the work. Although practicing mainly on the artisanal side, he did not resist new computer-based technologies, because he believed more precision and possibilities could be enabled in these ways. He also delineated the relationship between his drawings and sculptures--they are parallel art practices, while can be promoted by each other. The sculpture pieces shown in the gallery are Richard＇ s recent works, the idea and process of which are iterated--the idea came out from drawings at first, then fabricate them into sculptures. Applied color is also of his interest nowadays, for his exploration toward how colors could aIIiect the w^lume of sculptures, which is proved in his ＂New Alphabet＂ series. In the last part, Richard Deacon recalled his stories in China and introduced his lecture held at Central Academy of Fine Arts （CAFA）.
