“辗转”考

A Brief Research on Chinese Characters Zhan and Zhuan(辗转)

历来关于《诗经·周南·关雎》中"辗转反侧"之"辗"有两种解释:或认为"辗"单用无义,与"转"构成连绵词;或认为"辗"义同"转",二者为同义连用,后凝固为复合词。这两种解释均不确切,"辗"及其初文"展"当为"伸展"义,"辗转"是伸展及转身两个动作,"辗转反侧"指人躺着时伸展、转动、俯卧、侧身四种不同状态。以《汉语大字典》和《汉语大词典》为代表的多部辞书中"展"下都列出义项表"转动;翻转",是对前人误解的因袭,其释义和所列例证也都是需要商榷的。

It is generally believed that there are two interpretations of Zhan（ 辗） in the Guanju of Classic Poems. Some think that Zhan（ 辗） alone has no meaning,others think that the word and the ＂turn＂are synonymous.Actually,meaning of Zhan（ 辗） and Zhan（ 展） is stretched,and meaning of Zhanzhuan（ 辗转） is stretch and turn.
