Zonsei(Cunxing) is a kind of Chinese lacquer work that was imported to Japan. The term is often used to describe filled-in lacquer paintings, with engraved-gold decoration, but in fact its definition is ambiguous and it also sometimes includes carved polychrome lacquer. For example "Kundaikansoucho-ki"included Zonsei from the medieval period. It is thought that varieties of Zonsei existed from the Muromachi period to the Edo period. This paper attempts to research the history and art of Zonsei, which have been appreciated as ‘rare treasures'. Through observing collections regarded as Zonsei, studies its historical meaning and importance.
