Ordinary Tibetans were the focus of Extreme Road, the first documentary in the 100-episode series National Culture Journey produced by China's State Ethnic Affairs Commission. In this exclusive interview with key people, we learn about the making of this documentary, which was broadcast on CCTV-10 in late 2017 and early 2018, Unlike documentaries that focus on Tibet's scenery or religious cultures, Extreme Road focuses on life on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, a place so cold that it has been listed after the Arctic and Antarctica as the Earth's "third pole." Involved in its making were Zeng Hairuo, chief director of "Roof of the World;" Cheng Gong, director of the televised tbod series "A Bite of China," and producer Hu Xiaolu. Over two years, the team traveled through 73 cities and remote areas in Tibet. Besides the documentary version, the movie Extreme Road will be seen in China's cinemas in 2018. This exclusive interview with chief producer Zhang Shuang and with Zhao Daxin, chief planner of Extreme Road, also sheds light on future plans for National Culture Journey, a key project of the Ethnic Affairs Commission.
