It is an insightful way to understand the writings both of French novelist Marcel Proust and of his Chinese counterpart Shi Tiesheng when we relate their psychology of creation with their diseases suffered for years, which imprisoned them physically but contributed a lot to a more desperate inquiry into their inner world, that is, memory and imagination. The two novelists are devoted to writing in order to go beyond their physical sufferings and obtain their extrication. Both of them produce their “boundless” way of imagination from their totally different “limited” source of memory. While the way they emphasize the unconscious memory and pursue the closer “truth” from their artistic imagination is almost similar. They open up a creative world of their own memory and imagination.
