The traditional view holds that after the outbreak of “the Rebellion of the Seven States”, Emperor Jing killed Chao Cuo in order to make Wu, Chu and other countries lose ground for rebellion. This view is partially right. The root cause of Chao Cuo’s death lies in the fact that he ignored the governmental system, amended the State decrees without authorization, and formed sharp contradictions with all the other government officials. Chao Cuo’s chipping policy violates the ancestral system. Objectively, the Liu royal clan was separated. When Wu and Chu raised army and launched attack, Chao Cuo failed to put forward an effective counterattack plan. Instead, he took the opportunity to attack the political opponents.
