Reflections on Major Questions in Foreign Literature Studies in China:An Interview with Prof. Liu Jianjun

中国成规模的外国文学译介和研究出现于清末民初,这主要源于当时的中国对新的文化思想资源的需要,而且从根本上说,它是服务于中华民族伟大复兴的,同时也对中国作家的创作产生了深刻影响。可以说,今天中国的文学创作、研究和评论,都是在对西方现代文学话语的借鉴并在其影响下产生与发展起来的。当前的文学批评还是要"回到文本",以对抗理论先行的弊端和所谓"宏大理论建构"的空洞性和强烈的个人主观性。文学翻译的目的不仅要使某个特定的文本被母语为其它语言的人所理解,而且还要让其他民族或其他语言系统的人了解到源语文化系统中深层的东西。而所谓世界性的经典文学作品,其实就是被翻译得多的作品,也即具有无限增殖性的作品。

The extensive translation and studies of foreign literature in China appeared in the conjunction of the late Qing dynasty and the Republic of China Period（ 1912—1949）. This trend met the needs of the requirement of newthoughts,and in essence it contributed to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.Meanwhile,it imposed profound influence to Chinese writers. We think that almost all contemporary Chinese literary works,studies and critiques should attribute their development to the reference and influence of the western contemporary literary discourses. However,literary critiques should go‘back to the texts＇ so as to resist the theory-first defects and the inanition of the grand-theory construction and the strong subjectivity. The purpose of literary translation is not only to make well understood the given source texts by target language readers,but also to help them knowabout something deeper in the source language culture system. The worldwide literary classics in essence are those that have been most often translated into other languages.
