"任性"一词滥觞于汉末,其本义是"听凭秉性行事,率真不做作",表褒义。自汉至唐,其词义、语法基本沿袭未变。北宋以来直至现在,"任性"一般指"放任自己的性子,不加约束",表贬义。目前的网络流行语中的"任性"常指"按自己的意愿行事"或"符合自己的心愿",感情色彩为中性,有的略带嘲讽意味,有的略偏褒义。当下权威报刊中也会用到流行词"任性",但感情色彩常为贬义。导致"任性"的感情色彩发生变化的因素主要有:语素的多义性、社会的发展和人们认知观念的改变等。
