The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the so-called British Romantic period, witnessed radical changes in terms of the human-animal relationship.A great deal of animal poetry was written during this time. From the perspective of eco-criticism,this paper explores the humananimal relationship represented in the British Romantic poetry against the then social and cultural background, focusing on the poets' sympathies for animals, the connection between sufferings of animals and those of humans, and the poets' appeal for a harmonious relationship between humans and animals.Eco-criticism has provided a new approach to examine the British Romantic animal poetry and brought out a new meaning of the animal poetry.
