The extant texts and discourses of ZENG Guofan contain rich political and ethical thoughts. Tracing the source, what Zeng Guofan had been persistently committed to, sincerely believed in, respect- fully fulfilled and strongly defended during his politicaland military career were the Confucian orthodoxy and the political orthodoxy of the Qing Court. Focusing on Confucian orthodoxy and political orthodoxy, Zeng vigorously advocated the political and ethical propositions of rule by rites and ethic, of humanistic pragmatism and of strengthening politics with talents,trying to seek a certain anchoring force or path for the continuation of Confucian orthodoxy and political orthodoxy through his own understanding and enlightenment.
