以半虚构、半真实湘西社会生活为主体,土家族作家蔡测海在作品中描绘了一个静谧而相对比较封闭的地理、历史空间,以及构成这个空间的"人"的乡土意识与情感方式。同时,他的作品又通过现代文明对"乡土世界"的外部冲击视野,构建出一个在徘徊中躁动,在惶惑中挣脱的充满矛盾的"湘西社会",在小说的意识层面上努力探索"出走"与"回归"的精神主题。

Taking the Xiang Xi social life which is semifictional and half truthful as the main part,Tujia writer Cai Cehai has discribed a geographic and historic space that is quiet and relatively closed as well as of local consciousness and emotional ways of＂the persons＂who have constituted this space.Meanwhile,by the veiw of the extenal shocks that modern civilization has impacted on the＂local world,＂the writer has created a Xiang Xi society that is full of contradictions wandering and breaking away in fear,and has strived to explore a spiritual theme of＂leave＂and＂return＂in the conscious level of the novel.
