葛译莫言小说中的篇章改写模式——以《红高粱家族》英译本第五章为例

Patterns of Textual Adaptation in Howard Goldblatt's Translations of Mo Yan's Novels: A Case Study of Chapter Five in Red Sorghum

从翻译视角来说,葛浩文英译莫言小说的最大特色是"连译带改",这种改写在篇章结构方面尤为突出。葛译基于英汉语在段落上的差异大胆地对源语段落布局进行改写,其频率之高从《红高粱家族》英译本第五章可见一斑。葛译篇章改写模式可以概括为合并、拆分、综合三种,其主要动因可从字数、主题、话轮、情节、强调等五个方面予以解释。

From the perspective of translation studies,the most outstanding feature of Howard Goldblatt＇s English versions of Mo Yan＇s Novels is adaptation,especially in terms of textual rearrangement,whose high frequency is typically reflected in Chapter Five ＂Strange Death ＂of Red Sorghum,where three patterns of adaptation can be identified： merging,dividing,and a combination of both. Based on the differences between Chinese and English at the level of paragraphs,this practice can be justified by five factors： the number of words,theme,turn,scene,and emphasis.
