《围城》是描写抗战环境中留洋知识分子命运的一部作品。小说将具有现代性追求的留洋知识分子放回到中国传统文化环境之中。传统文化对留洋知识分子讲求个性、自由、独立的现代意识形成了合围之势。在文化矛盾中穿梭的留洋知识分子,由于缺乏社会生活经验、缺乏社会担当而陷入了现代性困境之中。对这些人物命运的抒写,体现了在动荡的环境中钱钟书对中国传统文化走向的观照,彰显了作家对中国传统文化现代性转换抱有期许的文化理想。

Fortress besieged is a novel about the fate of the intellectuals in the Anti-Japanese War. In the novel the intellectuals,who pursued modernity and studied abroad,were put back into the traditional Chinese cultural environment. Even though they had the modern consciousness,such as striving for their own personality,their freedom and independence,the Chinese traditional culture has surrounded them. Owing to the lack of social experiences and social responsibility,the intellectuals travelling back and forth in the cultural contradictions were trapped in the predicament of modernity. The description about the fate of these characters reflects that Qian Zhongshu pays a close attention to the trend of Chinese traditional culture,and it also highlights the writers＇ expectation of the modernity transformation about Chinese traditional culture.
