Although the renowned English novelist Iris Murdoch refused to be labelled as a feminist writer, her early novel The Flight from the Enchanter is imbued with the feminist consciousness, obliquely reflecting the true situations and the existential status quo of the British women from different classes who still subordinated to men in a male-centred patriarchal society. The feminist perspective used by Simone de Beauvoir in The Second Sex,coupled with Iris Murdoch's conception of love, fantasy, freedom, attention will be applied to examine the inequality encountered by women in the fields of education, career and sexual relationships and the female friendship under the male shadow. The conclusions can be drawn that women were still the absolute Other defined by men under the tradition of the post-war partriarchal society, women who endeavor to gain freedom, equality and the subject position were still doomed to struggle under the male enchantment, and the female friendship shrouded by the sexist discrimination cannot sublimate into true friendship.
