Constructing a Model for Chinese-English Poetry Translation Assessment: A Functional Perspective

《红楼梦》中香菱学诗的故事，被广泛选编入初高中语文教材，成为传播锲而不舍、天道酬勤正能量的经典励志名篇。本文从功能语言学视角尝试界定出中英诗歌文体翻译批评路线图，并以香菱“所作”的三首诗及其四个英语译本的翻译进行检验。本文提出诗歌的翻译应采取自上而下的视角且具有优先等级选择，即先做到语篇对应以诗译诗，再着眼于诗歌语篇的形式特征，然后下移至诗句（及以下层面）的元功能对应。

This paper sets out to design a route map for the assessment or criticism of poetry translation from Chinese into English and then to evaluate the applicability of the model with reference to the three poems Xiangling attempted to write one after another in The Dream of the Red Chamber and their four English translations. The authors propose that in order to secure an overall textual equivalence a top-down procedure should be taken in poem translation, prior to specific text features whereby metafunctional equivalence are achieved at the clause level and other lower strata
