E. L. Doctorow has always been a socialist writer who concerns a lot about society. Noted for the mixture of fiction and fact and concerned with political topics, his novel vividly depicts different peri- ods of American history in the twentieth century. As civilization moves on, society reforms and perfects itself in many respects. Doctorow argues, however, in American society there still exists political authority and in- justice which is in the way of the development of freedom and democracy. As a writer of social responsibili- ty, Doctorow attempts to represent history, replenish official discourse, appeal for concerning of the bor- dered and social justice, and to reflect over modern American politics.
