XU Mian-zhai's Characteristics of Drug Use

许勉斋用药善用桂枝,喜用白术,止痛用三七和九香虫;用方善用仲景方和景岳方,用桂枝汤治疗慢性肝炎及各种杂病,用麻杏石甘汤治疗肺炎,并认为石膏用量应多于麻黄,用瓜蒌薤白汤治疗哮喘,用景岳之方保阴煎填阴固脱,养心宁神,用附子理中汤合二陈煎治疗肺结核,用济川煎治疗精血亏虚之便秘,较好的传承了张仲景和张景岳学术思想。

XU Mian-zhai is very good at using Guizhi(Ramulus Cinnamomi） and Baizhu(Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae）,etc. Guizhi is bitter and sweet and aromatic in flavor,can invigorate stomach and promote appetite,invigorate spleen and stop diarrhea,so for weak spleen and stomach due to chronic disease,poor appetite,fatigue,sallow complexion,deficiency-cold,fever of deficiency type,softfeces,frequent urination,or clear or long,etc. they are very effective. For liver stagnation,abdominal pain,vomiting,Mr. Xu always uses Modified Left Metal Pill,because he thinks that raw and cold food hurts the stomach,restrain middle-jiao yang,and leads to the stomach failing to descend,so the attack involves the lung which can＇t stand the attack and causes vomiting. Cinnamon Twig Decoction is the head of all the prescriptions,can regulate yingqi and weiqi,nourish yin and harmonize yang,expel pathogenic factors from muscles and skin for sweating,so Mr. Xu always uses it to treat all kinds of miscellaneous diseases,chronic hepatitis. For spleen deficiency,he often uses Costusroot and Amomum Six Gentlemen Decoction combined with Modified Cinnamon Twig Decoction. prescriptions and can flexibly apply them For pneumonia,he often uses Ephedra and Apricot Kernel and Gypsum and Licorice Decoction. Trichosanthes and Chinese Chive and Pinellia Decoction is often used to treat chest obstruction,but Mr. Xu always uses it to treat asthma. He is very convinced of Jing Yue＇s theory. He has written Jing-yue Xinfang Zhaiyao Gekuo which inherits the academic thoughts of Zhang Zhong-jing and Zhang Jing-yue.
