The Significance of Zhuangzi's Philosophy of Language on Translation Studies

庄子深入探讨了语言的本质及言、意、知等概念的关系,在承认语言作为思想载体作用的同时,也警示了语言的局限性,提出应不断追求对语言的内在超越。庄子的语言哲学对于理解和指导翻译,尤其是哲学典籍的翻译具有重要的借鉴和启发意义:哲学典籍是哲学家对宇宙观、本体论、认识论、方法论等普遍性规律的高度概括,译本应是哲学家之"道"的再现;译者应追求"大言"、抛弃"小言",实现"质"的传递和语言的内在升华,在具体方法上应正确理解和把握"质",注重对"质"的考据与查证,对抽象的、普遍性的概括或描述应进行举例或注解,而不拘泥字句或追求文辞的华丽。

This paper mainly explores the significance of Zhuangzi＇s philosophy of language on understanding and guiding translational activity, especially the translation of philosophical classics.Zhuangzi＇ s philosophy of language is rich in logical analysis, as he discusses in depth the essence of language and the relationship between language, meaning and knowledge.Admitting the role and function of language as the carrier of thought, he also elucidates the bound of language and argues for the inner transcendence of the limitations, which provides new perspective and guidance for translation studies.Specifically, the translation of philosophical classics should focus on representing the Way of the philosopher, as the philosophical classics are the recapitulation of a philosopher＇ s cosmology, ontology, epistemology, methodology, etc., which altogether constitute the philosopher＇s Way.In this way translators are suggested pursuing ＂great speech＂ while abandoning ＂petty speech＂, realizing the transmission of essence and the inner transcendence of language.The methodology may include making prudent clarifications of the ＂essence＂ by annotation research and investigation, explaining in details of the highly abstract by exemplifications, notes and commentaries, avoiding sticking to the letter,etc.
