Lessing' s novel The Memoirs of a Survivor depicts the survivor' s lives and psychological changes and it contains great literary thoughts and ecological significance. However, there still exists quite different opinions on the heroine Emily and some issues are left hanging in the air. This paper intends to reread the novel from the perspective of ethical literary criticism. By taking the historical and ethical context of the novel into consideration, the paper tries to unfold Emily' s ethical choice and analyze her psychological changes and self-salvation. Through such an ethical rereading of the novel, we may have a better understanding of Lessing' s moral and ethical thought.
