A Judge Dee Mystery, written by Robert van Guiik, built lots of different images of merchants who were treated as a special community in ancient China, through unique presentations of their social activities, negative descriptions and depicts of humanities. Building these merchants images were not only a literary creation showing their lives to the western readers through light literature, but reflected intentions of the author who tried to express the complexity and reality of human nature as well as his understanding towards humanism. These images of merchants in this novel reflected the sinologist Gulik' s special viewpoints towards society, law and family ethics of ancient China, while he opened a special cultural perspective for western readers to experience and think about the social activities in ancient China.
