In 1994, over 150,000 glass beads of delicate formation were excavated from Yongning Temple's west gate ruins of Northern Wei Dynasty in Luoyang, which attracted close attention from quite a few scholars, such as An Jiayao, Meng Hui and Zhu Xiaoli. Those beads' production technology, chemical ingredients and source have been revealed ever since. Based on existing research findings and documentary records, the usage of them has been presumed to be: sewing bead stature, making Buddha necklace, and bead curtains for buildings; and the connection between the beads and solemn Buddhism trend of the day has also been discussed, through which we can get an idea about the China-western trade and cultural exchanges taken by the Silk Road.
