Discussion on Zhu Zi's Views of Reading

朱熹肯定读书在修养成圣过程中的必要性,认为读书是格物的重要途径;但又认为读书只是学者第二事,经历实践才是第一事;读书需要以持敬为前提,同时,作为一种个体行为本身,读书也是培养持敬的重要途径;读书以求理为目的,其实质则是在一定方法与工夫指导下义理于心中的自然显现。朱子读书法的现代意义必须在充分了解古今阅读状况差异的前提下来讨论,而且这些现代意义最终要落实并体现在现实的阅读实践当中。

Zhu Xi affirms the necessity of reading in the process of becoming a saint and believes that reading is an important way of investigating things. But he thinks that reading is only the second thing of a scholar and experiencing practiceis the first thing for a scholar. He thinks that reading needs to be the premise of respect and reading is an important way to cultivate respect as a kind of individual behavior.The purpose of reading is to be rational and the essence is the natural appearance of the truth in the mind under the guidance of a certain method and work.The modern meaning of Zhu Xi's reading methods must be discussed in the understanding of the differences between the ancient and modern reading conditions,and these modern meanings must be implemented in the practical reading practice.
