Initiation is an essential motif in African English literature. A number of short stories in C. N. Adichie＇s collection The Thing Around Your Neck,such as ＂Tomorrow Is Too Far＂,＂Cell One＂,＂A Private Experience＂and ＂The Headstrong Historian＂,explore the theme of trauma and initiation. The main characters in these stories undergo different experiences of trauma in their childhood or teenage years,which are caused either by traditional out-dated ideas or by West-orientated colonial education. The narration of trauma and initiation in Adichie＇s The Thing Around Your Neck is colored with encouraging optimism. In Adichie＇s eyes,young people in Nigeria have to go through different kinds of traumas and misfortunes in their growth,which may contribute to their spiritual maturity with a sense of responsibility for their country and people.
