Participatory collecting is a new practice emerging in some of the western museums that ad- dresses the idea of "documenting the present". In participatory collecting, the museum organizes programs and activities to encourage the public to contribute their own objects to the museum collection. It connects the public with museum items, contents, and contexts through participation, and is closely associated with current social development and changes in production and life styles. It breaks through the limits of the relatively single and closed mode of traditional collecting and is characterized by mobility, sharing, diversity, and vitality. Featuring "documenting the present", "focusing on daily life", and "highlighting the connection between people and collection", participatory collecting enriches the meaning and connotation of museum collections and adds new perspectives to traditional methods of collecting. With a participatory collecting view, maritime museums will have more broad space for innovation in their collecting practices.
