An instrument distortion fault occurred in the production process of 800 kt/a sulphur-burning sulphuric acid plant was described.The cause of the fault was an abnormality in the free end of the thermocouple which led to the distortion of the display data of the instrument.The human operator intervened in the system temperature without finding out the real cause of the fault.It caused excessive SO2 emission and shutdown of the plant.In order to avoid this kind of maloperation,the inspection and maintenance of the instrument must be strengthened,and the parameters of the process must not be adjusted blindly.
