In Andersonville, American novelist MacKinlay Kantor has created a variety of characters in American Civil War, and he has woven their lives and fates with the war taking the exchange of prisoners, military strategies and the bureaucratic administration as the background. The novel has proved Kantor's success in combining aesthetic charm with ideological criticism, which shows the author's social concern, the sense of responsibility and humanistic sympathy.
