近代中国国门被迫打开后,西方新式体育伴随着其他西方事物一同进入中国,并开始了推广与开展。在群体上,学校及教会组织等是新式体育推广与开展的主要力量。在地域上,新式体育最先进入东南沿海城市,进而逐步扩展到内地,但东南沿海地区始终是新式体育开展的重心所在。新式体育最初的这种不均衡发展,为后来的普遍发展奠定了基础。排球运动作为新式体育的重要项目之一,其在近代中国推广与开展的情况体现了新式体育推广与开展的普遍情况。
