This paper introduces the research status of the unmanned cargo ship and the formulation of the corresponding legal norms, and points out that the development of the unmanned cargo ship has become a major trend in the global shipping industry. Comparing the performance of the unmanned cargo ship with the traditional one through the aspects of reducing costs, preventing piracy and avoiding accidents, this paper analyzes the great advantages of the unmanned cargo ship on economy and safety, which explains why the research of the unmanned cargo ship has become a hotspot. The technical problems to be paid attention to and solved is listed, including ship telecommunication, perception, autonomous decisionmaking and human-computer interaction. It provides reference for the follow-up technology development of the unmanned cargo ship.
