"物产"是方志必载之门类,可以追溯到先秦,体例形成于宋,完善于明。抄本《方志物产》是1950年代在中国农业遗产研究室万国鼎主任的领导下,辑录、整理国内近九千种方志的专题性资料,是世界上唯一一套方志物产史料集成汇编,其价值在于鸿篇巨制、再造古籍、检索便利、真实可靠等,是不可多得的方志物产类编,利于各方面历史研究和信息技术等领域的工作开展。新时代的史学研究需要更宽广的视野、更清晰的思路、更细致的史料,应用日益兴起的数字人文技术来深度挖掘该《方志物产》,将实现古代文本与情报学、信息科学的完美融合,把我国的古籍数字化与方志研究提高到一个全新的高度。
