STERN: That's an interesting question about "postmodernism" in general. It was a movement of the late 1960s, absolutely. I still think we are in a postmodern condition, not only in architecture, but in all the arts. You know, in a funny way, even in politics in 1965 or 1966, China was a very different place than it is today. It believed in a single, narrow focus. What postmodernism says, at the most basic level, is in the modern world it's not a singular thing as modernism had argued, but there are many directions-cultural, political, and artistic directions-and they are not necessarily as high and low, good and bad, but different. Our obligation as architects or artists is to connect to different ones.
