The sulfur cap and its impact on the industry

The implementation of the 2020 global sulfur cap presents numerous compliance options for owners of newbuildings and existing tonnage. The January 1 2020 deadline for compliance with the revision of IMO Marpol Annex VI presents multiple challenges for shipowners. These include availability of compliant low-sulfur fuel, technology retrofit issues, future-proofing against further regulation and even disruption to shipping operations. What we can be sure of is that the IMO has sent a clear signal: the 2020 deadline is not negotiable. Of course, it does not have the responsibility of ensuring the required grade of fuel is available, but it is confident member states will act to ensure that supplies are in place and that penalties are levied for non-compliance in a consistent manner across the globe. Some industry organisations have gone further, calling for the banning of high sulfur fuel oil(HSFO) with exemptions only for ships that are fitted with scrubbers. For compliance-minded shipowners the 2020 sulfur cap is a fact of life, not a matter of debate. The industry's response will be critical to defining the future of cleaner shipping and ultimately moving it towards the next environmental challenge.
