English listening plays a crucial role in the four basic skills, namely listening, speaking, read一ing and writing, as well as an indispensable part in all kinds of English tests. However , listening lessons are al一ways time一consuming and with undesirable results in teaching. English listening has gradually become a subject of more panic for students. This paper mainly discusses the existing problems in listening for freshmen majoringin English in non一govemmental colleges in the hope of putting forward some feasible countermeasures to improve the situation.
