在西学东渐史上,英国传教士傅兰雅是个非常著名的人物。他在华从事外语和西学教育、科学翻译、创办报刊等一系列重要活动,为中西方文化交流作出了贡献。香港圣保罗书院是近代中国最早创办的新式学堂之一,傅兰雅作为校长,积极开展外语和西学教育,培养了伍廷芳等近代著名的政治、外交、实业和教育等领域的人才,在一定程度上促进了中国的现代化进程。

In the history of introducing Western learning,John Fryer,a well-recognized British missionary,made great contributions to the Sino-Western cultural exchange through engaging himself in important activities of conducting education of foreign languages and Western learning,translating scientific books and editing newspapers and periodicals. St. Paul＇s College was among the earliest established new-style schools in modern China. As the Principal of the college,John Fryer started his career in teaching Chinese students foreign languages and Western learning. He trained many distinguished scholars,such as Wu Tingfang and many other talents in modern political,diplomatic,business and educational fields,and promoted the process of China＇s modernization.
