身份认同问题始终困扰着华人和华裔。伍慧明的小说《望岩》叙述了在中美截然相反的文化背景下,杰克、乔伊斯、维达等几代华人(华裔)努力生活,以不同的方式不断寻求自我身份认同的故事。伍慧明利用自身的双重文化身份,通过作品向读者表明,在美国多元文化背景下,华裔必须适应美国的生活方式,同时保持自己的民族特色,在文化差异和冲突中找到一种平衡的方式去构建自己的身份。

The identity problem has always plagued generations of Chinese Americans. Steer Toward Rock describes the lives of generations of Chinese Americans in the opposite cultural background of China and the United States. Although they suffer unfair treatment, they still strive to live and seek their cultural identity in different ways. Fae Myenne Ng, with her dual cultural identity, continuously conveys the idea that Chinese Americans must adapt themselves to the way of life in the US, while maintaining their own national characteristics and they should also find a balanced way to build their own identity in cultural differences and conflicts.
