杜定友留学菲律宾时期史料考辨

A Critical Survey of Ding U.Doo's Oversea Experience in Philippines

1918-1921年,杜定友在菲律宾大学深造三载,获得三个学位与一张资格证书。学界对此所知有限,所论多有错漏。在广泛挖掘英文史料的基础上,首先介绍菲律宾大学早期的图书馆学教育史,以及罗伯特森与包玛丽两位关键人物的相关情况。然后考察杜定友在菲律宾大学的求学情况,对其获得的学位与资格证书进行辨析,提出他并未获得真正意义上的文学学士学位。最后介绍杜定友修习的图书馆学课程,指出美国图书馆学文献在菲律宾大学图书馆学系的课程体系中占据主导地位,因此他接受的确实是美式图书馆学教育。

Little has been known about Ding U.Doo’s three-year campus life in the University of Philippines.On the basis of some newly-found historical materials,this paper firstly makes a brief survey of the early history of library science education in the University of Philippines as well as its two key persons,i.e.,Mr.James Alexander Robertson and Miss Mary Polk,and then makes a review of Doo’s campus life in the University of Philippines.It points out that Doo’s Bachelor of Arts（Bachiller en Artes）was equal to Associate in Arts.Finally,it gives an introduction to the courses in library science that Doo might studied,in which American library science works played a dominant role.In short,what Doo received was a distinctively American library science education.
