Brief Comparison on Two Versions of Translation of A Short History of Chinese Philosophy

冯友兰先生的英文著作《中国哲学简史》,有其学生涂又光和学者赵复三两位先生翻译的两个中译本。以一般读者眼光来看,涂译本多硬译,且多文言句式,赵译本多活译,且多白话。在处理回译的翻译上,赵译本更忠实于冯友兰先生的原文,还原了冯友兰先生对于中华原典的解读。总体来看,涂译本虽文雅一些,但不无拗口之处;而赵译本更加清新易懂,更适应于市场和读者的需求。

The English book A Short History of Chinese Philosophy,whose author is Feng You-lan, was translated into Chinese by both Tu You-guang（Feng＇s disciple） and Zhao Fu-san.From a general view of one reader, the version of Tu You-guang＇s translation constitutes forced translation as well as some classical Chinese prose,while the version of Zhao Fu-san＇s translation consists of dynamic equivalence translation with vernacular Chinese.In dealing with back-translations, Zhao＇s translation follows the original text of Feng faithfully,so that it reverts to Feng＇s interpretation of Chinese classics.Tu＇s translation is elegant but awkward-sounding,while Zhao＇s translation is fresh and easy to be read so it may be suitable for the needs of the market and of readers.
