Founded in 1993 in Rotterdam, and marking its 25 year history this year with a freshly opened Paris office, MVRDV is "one of the very rare practices in its league to have kept both a wide array of activities and a balance between all these activities, which can place architecture back in a very influential position " . MVRDV is also a collaborative practice, in opposition to the cliche of the individual starchitect which has "tyrannized the architectural scene and media representation of architecture for the last few decades." With output ranging simultaneously from urban planning to architecture, from academic research to commercial developments, from writing and publications to exhibitions, the work of MVRDV over the past quarter century years has described not only a particular vision of architecture but also a particular mode of practicing architecture. This article is based on an interview taken in this context, with founding partner Winy Maas (Schijndel, 1959), on the occasion of his lecture at Tsinghua University School of Architecture, on May 30th, 2018, and focuses on the definition of urbanism, beyond the building as an object, towards the science behind city making, and the future of our planet.
