Objective To investigate the relationship between plasma tau protein, ptau protein and cognitive function in the elderly with hypoglycemia. Methods A total of 136 elderly patients with hypoglycemia were selected in this study from January 2014 to January 2017 in the Department of Geriatrics,Second People's Hospital of Lianyungang. All the patients were divided into two groups according to the results of AD8 and MMSE:patients with cognitive impairment(CI group,n=68)and patients without cognitive impairment(Con group,n=68).Tau protein and ptau protein levels were tested in all the subjects. Results The level of glucose was significantly lower in CI group than in Con group[(3.01±0.96)vs(3.56±0.61)mmol/L,P〈0.05].The duration of hypoglycemia was significantly longer in CI group than in Con group[(120.61±80.37)vs(30.58±22.34)min,P〈0.05].The levels of tau protein and ptau protein were significantly higher in CI group than in Con group[(195.57±63.14)vs(125.16±49.35)pg/ml,(79.35±13.85)vs(40.53±16.91)pg/ml,P〈0.05].Tau protein and ptau protein had no significant correlation with hypoglycemia or duration of hypoglycemia(P〉0.05).Tau protein and ptau protein were negatively correlated with MMSE(P〈0.05). Conclusion Plasma tau protein and ptau protein levels can reflect the degree of cognitive impairment in elderly patients with hypoglycemia.
