詹姆斯·费伦是美国修辞性叙事理论研究的代表人物,他的新作《阅读美国小说,1920-2010》以修辞性叙事理论为主要切入点,解读10部美国小说,在明确入选小说经典地位的同时,也进一步明晰了修辞性叙事理论的诸多概念,如"隐含作者""不可靠叙述""声音""叙事伦理"等。本文概述了这部著作的主要内容,简要评之,并指出这部著作对于从事修辞性叙事批评的学者具有重要的参考价值。
The paper reviews Reading the American Novel 1920-2010,a newly released book by James Phelan,one of the leading American rhetorical narrative theorists. In the book Phelan reinterpreted ten American novels mainly from the perspective of rhetorical narrative theory,proving their classical status and clarifying various concepts in rhetorical narrative theory,such as implied author,unreliable narration,voice and narrative ethics,etc. The paper introduces the main contents of the book,makes a brief comment on it,and points out its great value to scholars interested in rhetorical narrative criticism.
