Seeking for Ideal Human Nature and Poetic Living: A Study on Xu Xu's plays

徐訏的剧作大都借男女婚恋题材表达对人性、文明的思考:他审视热恋男女微妙的精神世界,思考权利与义务、理想与责任等人生问题;他肯定现代文明,也反思现代"唯理"社会对人情人性的扭曲和异化,表现出对"现代"与"传统"、东西方文化的双重审视态度。他剧作中的"寂寞与哀愁",既有人性的隐忧,也有文明的忧惧。受左翼思潮影响,他将金钱观念与现代资本主义社会联系起来批判,反对以青春美貌来衡量女性的价值,赞美底层劳动妇女坚强的个性与独立的精神。尽管徐訏的理想受到了世俗观念、现代文明、民族战争的重重威胁,但他终生都在戏剧创作中探寻理想的人性与诗意的生存。

Marriage and love is a recurrent theme in Xu Xu＇s plays. He examined the inner worlds of men and women in love, discussed the issues of life, reflected on modernity and alienation, and reviewed the East and the West. The loneliness and sorrow expressed in his plays were his fear of both human nature and modern civilization. He criticized capitalism, objected to judging a woman by her age or appearance, and appraised the strength and independence of working women. Threatened by worldliness, modernity and wars, Xu dedicated his life to seeking for ideal human nature and poetic living.
