Agree or Disagree:Circulation of Cash Gift on Rural Birthday Ceremonies

改革开放以来,中国乡村社会关系发生剧烈变化。传统寿礼仪式作为乡村社会关系的展示平台,仪式参与者们在其中展现出自身的行为倾向,进而型塑社会关系。一方面,礼金交换取代了礼物交换,社会交换逐渐趋同于市场交换,经济理性渗入到传统的社会交换中,金钱对人际关系产生强烈的支配作用。另一方面,出于对人情关系的维护和维持,金钱在寿礼上的流通表现出一定程度的形式性,并没完全发挥其经济效用,现代化的冲击力也由此被削弱,呈现出中国乡村社会关系所具有的现代与传统共生共存的转型期特点。

Since the reform and opening up, rural social relations in China has undergone dramatic change. On traditional birthday ceremonies, such a demonstration platform of rural social relations, participants show their own behavior tendency, and it shapes the relations. On the one hand, cash gift replaces gift and social exchange becomes similar to market exchange, so economic rationality permeates into traditional social exchange and money plays a significant and dominant role in social relations. On the other hand, for the sack of maintaining relations, circulation of cash gift on rural birthday ceremonies is a mere formality, failing to give full play to its economic utility. The impact of modernization is thus weakened, and it shows a special feature that China’s rural social relations have in the transforming period with modernity and tradition coexisting.
