《红豆生南国》是王安忆继《香港的情与爱》之后再次书写香港城市的作品。它不仅用"恩情"一词对世间亲情、爱情、友情等具体情感形式做了概括,实现了其对人际伦常的再解读,还使原本已作为历史背景的"香港"一跃成了书写对象,从而拥有了作为背景和对象的双重角色。"恩情"和"香港"皆成为书写对象,使得文本在面临意义不确定的同时又以对人类如"莫比乌斯带"般的存在困境的揭示实现了叙述的统一。
