Based on Halliday＇ s metafunction and Kress ＆ Leeuwen＇ s social semiotics, this paper attempts to present a muhi-modal analysis of Amy Lowell＇ s one of the best-known poems Patterns, with a focus on transitivity in ideational function, modality system in interpersonal function and theme system in textual function. The thematic meaning of the poem, the feelings of the protagonist and the attitude of the poet are expected to be fully evaluated in both text model and non-text model, thus making the poem reading a fascinating journey.
