Performativity, developed by Judith Butler, plays an important role in gender research, which claims the uncertainty and instability of sex identity and it has performance in style and stylized repeated actions. The gender performance theory also illustrates the oppressive logic of the heterosexual matrix and the parody nature of the drag and drop. Based on Judith Butler’s theory, the paper explores the tumultuous sex identity of Carson McCullers, which is correspondingly reflected in the sex identity of tomboys in her works. The discussion ends up with the tomboys’ double performance of both masculinity and femininity.
