New Hometown Narratives under the Enlightenment:On Yuan Jinmei's Writings

故乡书写是新移民文学的重要主题之一。新世纪以来,华人移民渐趋成为跨国移民。持续性的跨界生活,以及移动互联时代的便捷通讯,使得他们对母国与定居国几乎实现了同步嵌入,也使得他们对故乡的情感定位有了很多变化。故乡以新的方式回归到新移民的现实版图中。在巨变的故乡与文化异质的定居国之间的频繁切换中,新移民作家的故乡书写有了不一样的色彩。在新的故乡书写中,袁劲梅的写作是独具个性的。她的叙事追求始终都落脚在中西文化的沟通和国民性批判、民族文化批判上面,试图借助异域文化的他山之石,以攻故乡传统伦理和民族心理积淀中的痼疾与沉珂。这种强烈的现代启蒙冲动背后是对故国故乡的绵厚情感以及知识分子的济世情怀。

Writing about one＇s hometown is an important theme in the literature of new migrants. Since the beginning of the new century, migrants from China have gradually become transnational migrants. A continued cross-border life, with communications made easier in an age of internet, has made it possible for them to simultaneously insert themselves in their motherland and the countries they have migrated to and has led to much change in their emotional positionings in relation to their hometowns,which have returned to their map of realities in new ways. In a frequent switch between the enormously changing hometown and the resident countries with heterogeneous cultures, writing by new migrants about their hometowns is tinged with different hues. In this, Yuan Jinmei＇s is a unique case as her narrative pursuits are always situated where Sino-Western cultural communications and critiquing of the nature of the Chinese people and of the Chinese culture are concerned, in an attempt to deal with the ills of the traditional hometown ethics and psychological sedimentation of the nation. What lies behind this strong modern enlightening impulse is her deep feelings for her native country and her worldly concerns as an intellectual.
