On Contemporary British Plant Poetry

Plant poetry has played an important role in the British poetic tradition and has drawn attention from many contemporary poets and critics. Gillian Clarke, Kathleen Jamie and John Burnside are the most prominent poets who explore different meanings of plants in the contemporary world, develop a new understanding of the complicated relationship between the human world and plants, and present a non-anthropocen-tric poetic interpretation of plants. Reflecting on the tradition of plant poetry and facing up to the current ecological challenges, the poets propose that human beings should build a harmonious relationship with nature as members of the same community. This proposal demonstrates that plant poetry has become a significant tradition in contemporary British poetry and cast great influence on contemporary society.
