Identity construction has always been one of the most sensitive issues confronting immigrants. In Swing Time, Zadie Smith paints a nuanced multi-dimensional picture of the status quo and identity crisis among immigrant groups in contemporary Britain. This article examines how the first-person protagonist resorts to legitimacy, resistance and project planning during her identity construction, diagnosing her identity crisis as a result of her inability to enter a cosmopolitan mentality in a multicultural society due to the impact of her family and her own cognitive inadequacy. Through the story of a single diasporic individual and her failure in identity construction, Zadie Smith teaches the importance of an open and inclusive mind.
