In Days Without End, Sebastian Barry's depreciative humor, characterized by sarcasm, ridicule and irony, vividly captures the daily affairs of the human world and the inconsistency of human relations. In addition, his humor of self-depreciation, by means of self-blame, self-ridicule and self-despise, demonstrates the rationality, logic and justice of the novel's theme. Barry presents the blackness and coldness of his humor from the viewpoint of analogy, contrast and fantasy, which reveals the variation of human nature in different contexts, and unveils the individual and social tragedies after human nature is reversed. With this cold humor seeping from every pore of the novel, Barry maximizes his creative inheritance of the narrative tradition of Irish literature.
